Standing with the People of Manipur
Call to Prayer
In May 2023, violence erupted in Manipur – an Indian state located in the northeastern part of the country along the Myanmar border. The ethnic conflict is between the majority Meitei (predominantly animistic / Hindus) and minority tribal groups (Kuki, Hmar, Zou, Paite – all Christians) in Imphal, Manipur. The Kukis are primarily Christian with a strong Baptist population.
As of August 4, the violence has resulted in more than 170 deaths, 1,800+ houses burned, and over 500 individuals injured and hospitalized. More than 50,000 people have been forced to flee their homes for refugee camps because of, among other political factors, their ethnicity and faith in Jesus Christ. Over 350 churches have been destroyed of which 240+ belong to Meitei Christians. Our Baptist sisters and brothers from the Council of Baptist Churches in Northeast India (CBCNEI) have been significantly impacted.

How Baptists Are Responding
In July, video footage of women being paraded naked through the streets was released, sparking outrage across the region and the world. As Baptists, we stand in solidarity against all gender-based violence.
Hosting Community Peace Rally
Centenary Baptist Church in Secunderabad (India) hosted a Peace Rally for Manipur on August 6, including a parade through the streets calling for prayer and peace.
Providing Aid and Support
Resources have been mobilized to provide needed food and supplies to those who have been displaced by the ongoing violence in the region.
