BWA Mobilizes Response to Global Humanitarian Aid Crisis

Baptist Network Unites for “Stand in the Gap” Initiative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(FALLS CHURCH, VIRGINIA – April 2, 2025) In response to the rapid reduction in global humanitarian aid funding over the last 100 days, the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) has launched the Stand in the Gap campaign, a global initiative aimed at mobilizing Baptists worldwide to pray, give, and stand in solidarity with the most vulnerable.

“We simply cannot stress enough how dire the situation is for many across the globe,” said Elijah Brown, BWA General Secretary and CEO. “We cannot replace the millions of aid dollars that have been lost, but as the Church, we also cannot sit on the sidelines.”

Baptist churches were encouraged to unite on Sunday, March 30, for “Stand in the Gap” Solidarity Sunday or to select a future worship service to pray for just peace and to give generously to help those who are suffering. A prayer guide was provided to build synergy in interceding for specific needs.

To further raise awareness, the campaign includes the “Power of 10” social media initiative calling on Baptists to give $10, pray specifically for 10 areas of need, post 10 times on their social channels, and connect with 10 others to encourage them to join the initiative.

“We believe these simple acts can create a ripple effect of global transformation,” said Marsha Scipio, BWAid Director. “We are mobilizing members of the global Baptist family, especially young leaders, to be change agents in a movement that will save lives and transform communities.”

On Thursday, April 3, 2025, the BWA will host a virtual Global Impact Church Briefing, bringing together church leaders from across the world to discuss the current global challenges as well as stories of how local Baptist churches are responding to the needs in their communities. Attendees will also learn more about the BWA’s response to the recent 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar last week, an area where residents are already struggling with the long-term ramifications of civil conflict.

The BWA encourages all Baptists to stand in the gap at this critical time. For more information on how to get involved, visit BaptistWorld.org/standinthegap.
