BWA General Council Resolution 1992.7
The General Council of the Baptist World Alliance, meeting in Montego Bay, Jamaica, July 4-12, 1992;
MINDFUL of the meetings of the General Council and the 12th Baptist Youth World Conference set for Zimbabwe in August, 1993;
CALLS for urgent recognition that southern Africa is presently in the grip of the worst drought in living memory with much of Zimbabwe, Angola and Mozambique having received no rainfall for over three years, thus placing millions of God’s children at risk of imminent starvation and death;
ACKNOWLEDGES that:
• Internal instability and endemic violence in many countries of the region aggravate an already desperate situation;
• The International Monetary Fund’s demands to secure repayment of external debt, diverting production away from domestic food supply, heightens distress;
IS CONCERNED that the global community does not neglect this massive disaster; and,
URGES members of the Baptist family world-wide, most particularly those who enjoy abundance, to heed the Biblical command to share our bread with the hungry by generous and sacrificial giving through Baptist World Aid and other agencies, and with all means at our disposal to press our governments to make a swift and sufficient response to the cry of our sisters and brothers who even now prepare to welcome us to their land.
