BWA General Council Resolution 1980.9
Historian’s Note: The General Council passed 8 resolutions that were adopted by the 1980 World Congress (and accordingly, they are not repeated in the BWA General Council database collection). The Council then adopted by consensus a resolution passed by the Women’s Department regarding Mrs. Tolbert and listed it in the minutes as resolution 9.
WHEREAS our sister in Christ, Victoria Tolbert, is incarcerated in Liberia following the death of her husband, William O. Tolbert, in a military coup, and
WHEREAS Mrs. Tolbert is a member of the Executive Committee of the Women’s Department of the Baptist World Alliance, and
WHEREAS Mrs. Tolbert was expected to participate in the women’s meetings of the Baptist World Congress in Toronto, and
WHEREAS she is sorely missed because her captors have not permitted her to come or to communicate with her sisters in Christ at this meeting, and
WHEREAS Mrs. Tolbert is known and appreciated around the world as a leader among Baptist women, and
WHEREAS Sir Cyril Black of London has offered financial assistance in relocating Mrs. Tolbert in another country and the Baptist World Alliance is prepared to assist in relocation,
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Baptist women’s leaders of the world and the Women’s Department of the Baptist World Alliance urge government officials in Liberia to free Mrs. Victoria Tolbert
And that Baptist women throughout the world be reminded to pray for this sister.
