BWA General Council Resolution 1991.3
THANKFUL TO Almighty God for the cessation of open war in Kuwait and Iraq,
MINDFUL of the tragic aftermath of such hostilities in terms not only of loss of life but also of the appalling social and economic conditions prevailing in the Gulf and the long-term threat to the environment caused by oil pollution in both sea and air,
CONCERNED ABOUT the distressing plight of ethnic minorities, the prevailing thirst for retaliation and revenge, the continuing violation of human rights and the dangerously unsettled state of the region generally, and
CONSCIOUS of the wide ramifications of such matters for many underdeveloped countries as well as for the countries of the Middle East itself,
Therefore General Council of the Baptist World Alliance, meeting in Montreal, Canada, July 10- 13, 1991, resolves to URGE member bodies throughout the world:
- to bring pressure to bear on their governments to strengthen the hand of the United Nations in its efforts to counteract aggression and to effect peaceful settlement in all areas of conflict whether or not the economic interests of powerful states are involved, and
- to pray unceasingly and to work earnestly for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East and not least for a strong and mutual commitment on the part of Israel and the neighboring states to find a solution to the situation of the Palestinian people.
