BWA General Council Resolution 1992.5

The General Council of the Baptist World Alliance, meeting in Montego Bay, Jamaica, July 4-12, 19922;

HAVING received a report from the Baptist World Alliance Human Rights Delegation to El Salvador in January, 1992, and also from our Baptist sisters and brothers in that troubled country;

CELEBRATES with profound thanksgiving to God the signing on January 16, 1992, of agreements between the Government of El Salvador and the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) to bring about a cease-fire and to move toward national reconciliation;

SHARES the hopes of all people in El Salvador seeking the establishment of a truly lasting peace;

AFFIRMS the continuing support for the members of church and humanitarian organizations who, during the period of the war, risked their own lives and security in order to assist victims of war and injustice;

CONVEYS special appreciation and love to the Baptist Association of El Salvador and its member churches for their faithfulness and courage in difficult times;

EXPRESSES grave concern at continuing reports of human rights violations and corruption of the judicial system at the highest levels;

URGES the government and the FMLN, in consultation with all sectors to continue working for reconciliation and reconstruction, demonstrating goodwill be securing the speedy and complete implementation of the accords ensuring respect for human rights, human integrity, the full exercise of democratic liberty and the solution of the socio-economic injustices which give rise to the war; and,

CALLS upon the governments of the developed nations to contribute generously to reconstruction, development and democracy in El Salvador, and to halt all military aid to El Salvador.
