BWA General Council Resolution 2004.3
The General Council of the Baptist World Alliance, meeting in Seoul, South Korea, July 28-31, 2004:
COMMENDS the Micah network (Micah 6.8) in their desire to strengthen the capacity of aid and development agencies such as Baptist World Aid to make a biblically-shaped response to the needs of the poor and oppressed in line with the World Evangelical Alliance resolution of 2001 to support the UN initiative to halve current levels of world poverty by 2015;
SUPPORTS the desire of the Baptist World Aid Committee to co-operate with over 270 evangelical Christian organisations providing relief, development and social justice ministries throughout the world, to launch the Micah Challenge on Millennium Development Goals on 15 October 2004, the day of the launch of the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty;
APPLAUDS the Micah Challenge to work to see the UN Millennium Goals achieved by 2015, which include
- addressing issues of extreme poverty and hunger,
- achieving universal primary education for all,
- reducing child mortality,
- reduction of diseases such as HIV/AIDs,
- greater gender equality,
- protection of the environment,
- reduction of the debt of the poorest nations,
- greater trade justice;
ENCOURAGES the churches of the Baptist World Alliance to join with other Christians to do all we can through our unions, conventions, aid and development agencies and Baptist World Aid to join this Micah challenge with prayerful, practical action in our nations and communities;
BELIEVES Christians everywhere must be agents of hope for and with the poor, and to work with others to hold our national and global leaders accountable in securing a more just and merciful world; and,
CALLS UPON the nations of the world to take seriously the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations in the desire to halve current levels of world poverty by 2015 and upon the richest nations to take urgent action to ensure that at least 0.7% of the national GNP is used to this end.
