BWA General Council Resolution 2009.1

The General Council of the Baptist World Alliance, meeting in Ede, the Netherlands, July 27- August 1, 2009;

Offers sincere thanks to the Union of Baptist Churches in the Netherlands for the invitation to hold this Annual Gathering in Ede on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the first Baptist congregation, formed in Amsterdam in 1609;

Expresses thanks to Albrecht Boerrigter, General Secretary of the Union of Baptist Churches in the Netherlands, to its President, Jannes Hofman, and to its former General Secretary, Anne de Vries, for their leadership and diligent efforts in making arrangements for the meeting;

Expresses appreciation to all the Baptists of the Netherlands, and especially to the tour hosts and volunteers from the churches for their gracious reception of Baptist representatives from throughout the world;

Thanks all who led in worship and the many other Baptists who provided leadership in various ways during the week;

Commemorates the founding and growth of the Baptist movement in the Netherlands, remembering John Smyth and Thomas Helwys, pastors of the earliest Baptist church in Amsterdam, and recalling with gratitude the welcome and hospitality given by Dutch Mennonites to this congregation in exile;

Prays God’s continued blessings on the Baptist World Alliance as we strive to be disciples of Christ in the new situation of our world today, in faithful succession to the Baptist witnesses to the Gospel who have gone before us.
