BWA General Council Resolution 1994.1
The General Council of the Baptist World Alliance meeting in Uppsala, Sweden from 18-24 July 1994:
DEPLORES the violence and bloodshed in the nations of Burundi and Rwanda during recent months:
LAMENTS the destruction of at least half a million lives in Rwanda alone;
EXPRESSES grave concern about the welfare of millions of refugees fleeing the continuing violence in Rwanda;
RECOGNIZES the growing burden which is being placed on the nations receiving Rwandan refugees;
ACKNOWLEDGES AND AFFIRMS the inescapable biblical principle which calls all Christians to be peacemakers;
URGES the immediate peaceful intervention by members of the international community for the dual purpose of providing a substantial humanitarian response and mediating a satisfactory statement among the warring factions;
IMPLORES all nations whose arms trade or other involvements compound the problems to cease from those activities;
CALLS UPON Baptists around the world to respond by giving promptly and generously to the Africa Refugee Assistance Fund of the Baptist World Alliance with its goal of US$ 1.5 million, including $500,000 through the ministry of Baptist World Aid.
