Past Meeting

The Commission on Human Rights Advocacy met from July 2-6, 2012, in Santiago, Chile, featuring sessions on current human rights issues such as the peace process in El Salvador; human rights advocacy at the United Nations, and “A Baptist Framework for Human Rights.”

Among other things, this Commission heard the inspirational story of Rev. Edgar Palacios, who was the recipient of the 2012 Denton and Janice Lotz Human Rights Award for his prominent role in advocating for the rights of the poor and negotiating the peacemaking process that brought to an end a civil war in El Salvador, which took approximately 75, 000 lives over the course of 12 years. (Press Release) In Santiago, Palacios affirmed: “I was only a servant, a servant of the people. The Lord used me.” There are many Baptists around the world dedicating their lives to similar causes, moved by their faith and love for God and for the world. Their stories need to be told.
