BWA General Council Resolution 1999.1
The General Council of the Baptist World Alliance meeting in Dresden July 11-17, 1999
RECALLS the 1998 General Council resolution endorsing the Jubilee 2000 initiative;
REJOICES in the developing success of this campaign, which seeks to encourage the forgiveness of debts by banks and government agencies to ensure a debt-free start to the next millennium for the poorest nations in the world;
CONGRATULATES the leaders of the G8 nations, meeting in Cologne, Germany 19 June 1999, for adopting a US$100 billion debt forgiveness package for some of these debtor nations; and
CALLS ON Baptists and all people of good will to continue to support the Jubilee 2000 campaign and to encourage creditor institutions and governments to implement these decisions speedily, and for debtor nations to translate this debt relief into tangible benefits for their citizens.
